What Is Vitamin A Test?

This test is carried out to calculate the amount of retinol in the system. This Vitamin is a significant nutrient which is essential for immune function, healthy vision, embryonic development, bone formation, and skin integrity. Vitamin A deficiency can cause damage eye to the eyes, impaired night vision, and the worst of it all; results in blindness. An acute excess of Vitamin A could be toxic, and in some cases, leads to childbirth defects.

The body can’t produce vitamin A, so it has to rely on sources of a diet with it. Meats are good sources of vitamin A, while fruits and vegetable provide carotene; a substance which could be transformed by the liver into vitamin A.

Vitamin A is stored in fat tissues and livers. The body sustains a solid concentration through a feedback system in the blood, which releases Vitamin A, and increases the dietary absorption efficiency.

How Is The Sample Collected?

A sample of blood is gotten by inserting a syringe into the vein. Due to vitamin A and retinol are sensitive to light, the blood sample has to be put away from light after it is obtained to avoid false low levels.

Is Any Preparation Required To Ensure Sample Quality?

No consumption of alcohol and fasting for 24 hours is required. Recent consumption of alcohol could lead to a false elevated level of vitamin A.

What Does The Result Of The Test Mean?

A typical vitamin A blood level shows that someone currently has enough vitamins in his system, but does not show how much is reserved.

However, a low vitamin check (ตรวจวิตามิน, which is the term in Thai) result shows that all reservoirs have been used up, and the person lacks vitamins. Blood with high vitamin A usually shows that the ability to store Vitamin A has been used up, and enough Vitamins are now moving in the blood all around the body.
